A Healthier Homemade Take on Ketchup 🍅

Why settle for the bottle when you can make ketchup from scratch? Crushed tomatoes, orange and lemon juice, capers, and a little brown sugar come together for a deliciously tangy condiment. It's easy to make, easy to keep on hand, and ready for your next burger or batch of fries. Ditch the bottle, make your own!

Homemade Ketchup

Yield: about 3 cups

24 oz crushed tomatoes

1 medium yellow onion, trimmed, peeled, and coarsely chopped

2 teaspoons capers, drained and rinsed

2-1/2 ounces golden brown sugar

Juice of 1 orange, strained

Juice of 1 lemon, strained

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Purée onions and capers in the blender on high speed for 1 minute. Add sugar and continue blending on high speed until the onion mixture is smooth, about 1 minute longer. Add citrus juices, vinegar, salt, and pepper and blend to incorporate.

In a saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat, add onion mixture and mashed tomatoes. Stir to combine. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to maintain a low simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to a ketchup consistency, about 50 minutes to 1 hour. Set aside to cool. Once the ketchup cools completely, use immediately or cover and refrigerate it for up to 2 months.
